DIAMATIX as part of Horizon Europe D-NAVIO: advancing Intelligent Digital Twins for safer, smarter shipping

As part of the Horizon Europe project D-NAVIO (Digital-Ship), DIAMATIX contributes cybersecurity and compliance expertise to the development of next-generation Intelligent Digital Twins (IDT) for large vessels. Coordinated by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the project brings together 16 partners from across Europe with a shared mission: to transform maritime transport into a safer, smarter, and more resilient industry.

Why D-NAVIO, and why now

Shipping is undergoing rapid digital transformation. Increased connectivity, integrated automation systems, and continuous data flows promise safer and more efficient operations—but also introduce new complexity and cybersecurity risks.

D-NAVIO addresses these challenges by building digital “clones of ships” that unify design, equipment, systems, and software into a live, explainable, and resilient decision-support layer.

What the project delivers

With a budget of ~€4 million and running from June 2025 to May 2028, the project will validate its approach on two pilots:

• a large passenger/cruise ship, and
• a large cargo/container ship.

D-NAVIO will deliver a user-centric platform focused on prediction, prevention, and rapid management of failures and hazards across the vessel lifecycle.

The work is structured around four pillars:

1. Data Space & Library – creating an extensible library of digital twins for waterborne systems.
2. Risk Assessment Toolkits – including hazard/failure methodologies, a failure reporting system, and a cybersecurity assessment toolkit.
3. System-of-Systems – developing a dynamic cloning system integrating XAI (explainable AI) and self-healing technologies.
4. Policy & Guidelines – preparing recommendations for safety, resilience, and cybersecurity in maritime digital systems.

DIAMATIX’s role: securing the digital twin

DIAMATIX is proud to contribute as the consortium’s cybersecurity and compliance partner, ensuring that digital twin technologies are secure by design and robust in real-world conditions.

Our Lead Security Engineer, Ivan Dragoev, represented DIAMATIX at the kickoff meeting in Athens (June, 2025), laying the foundation for security and resilience in the project’s roadmap.

Concretely, our work focuses on:

• Threat-informed security patterns for twin data pipelines and model inference.
• Cyber risk quantification & controls integrated with the project’s toolkits.
• Compliance-ready practices aligned with NIS2 and ISO 27001 across design, construction, sea trials, and operations.

Consortium at a glance

D-NAVIO unites academia, shipowners, technology providers, and cybersecurity experts under NTUA’s coordination to “master complexity” in waterborne digital transport. The project is Grant Agreement No. 101202933, with 16 European partners including DIAMATIX.
