Massive Spotify Content Scraping: Hacktivist Group Releases Over 86 Million Audio Files

The hacktivist shadow library Anna’s Archive has announced the release of a massive dataset allegedly scraped from Spotify, containing approximately 86 million audio files and metadata for more than 250 million tracks.

According to the group, the collection totals nearly 300 terabytes and covers almost the entirety of Spotify’s catalog. The data is being distributed in stages via BitTorrent, starting with metadata and followed by audio files ordered by popularity.

What is confirmed — and what is not

At this stage, there is no confirmation of a technical breach or infrastructure compromise at Spotify. The incident appears to involve large-scale automated scraping rather than exploitation of a software vulnerability.

Anna’s Archive claims it “discovered a way to scrape Spotify at scale,” though no technical specifics have been disclosed.

Preservation narrative vs. security reality

The group frames the release as a cultural preservation initiative, arguing that less popular music is at risk of disappearing. However, the activity involves the mass distribution of copyrighted material and represents a clear violation of platform policies and intellectual property laws.

From a cybersecurity perspective, the case highlights:

  • the risks of large-scale scraping

  • the importance of bot detection and API protection

  • the growing challenge of defending digital content platforms

DIAMATIX Perspective

This is not a traditional data breach, but a clear example of abuse of scale, automation, and weak behavioral controls.

For modern platforms, protecting digital assets requires:

  • continuous monitoring for abnormal access patterns

  • correlation across CDN, API, and application layers

  • MDR/XDR capabilities that extend beyond classic intrusion detection
