DIAMATIX Cybersecurity Weekly Digest: Critical PHP Vulnerabilities, Trusted Access and Ransomware Risks

October 17–23, 2026 | Week 43

This week, critical vulnerabilities in PHP, a major attack involving trusted cloud applications, and new ransomware intelligence highlighted how security weaknesses can extend across interconnected environments.

The developments reinforce the need to understand where critical technologies are deployed, monitor privileged access and maintain the ability to respond and recover when an incident affects essential systems.

Critical PHP vulnerabilities: Updating WordPress alone is not enough

Two critical vulnerabilities in PHP, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, prompted urgent security updates this week.

The flaws affect the underlying programming language used by WordPress and many other web applications. Depending on the affected configuration, successful exploitation could allow attackers to execute code on vulnerable servers.

The PHP project released security fixes, while organizations and public-sector operators began assessing their exposure. Some websites were temporarily taken offline as a precaution.

The important distinction for administrators is that updating WordPress, its themes or plugins does not necessarily address a vulnerability in the PHP runtime itself.

Organizations should identify affected PHP installations, apply supported security updates, review hosting configurations and assess potential exposure across all web applications.

ConnectWise Cloud Backup: When trusted applications become an attack path

A cybersecurity incident involving ConnectWise Cloud Backup demonstrated how access granted to trusted third-party applications can create risks across customer environments.

Attackers reportedly abused application credentials associated with the service to access Microsoft 365 environments through permissions granted to connected applications.

The case illustrates an important limitation of traditional account-focused security controls: application identities and service permissions can provide access to sensitive information without requiring attackers to compromise each user’s credentials individually.

Organizations should review third-party application permissions, investigate unusual activity, revoke compromised credentials and verify that unauthorized access has been fully removed.

SafePay ransomware: Authorities warn of extensive activity

A new joint advisory from the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned about SafePay ransomware activity.

According to the advisory, the group has affected more than 600 organizations across multiple sectors since 2024.

The warning highlights the continued importance of protecting privileged access, detecting suspicious activity early and maintaining recovery capabilities that cannot easily be disabled or compromised during an attack.

Organizations should ensure that incident response procedures are tested and that critical backups are appropriately isolated and recoverable.

Quest Diagnostics: Healthcare data remains a high-value target

US medical laboratory operator Quest Diagnostics disclosed unauthorized access involving its Quanum Lab Services Manager platform, which healthcare customers use to manage laboratory testing.

The company confirmed that certain patient records had been accessed, while the full scope of the incident remained under investigation.

The case demonstrates the importance of protecting healthcare platforms that connect service providers, medical organizations and sensitive patient information.

Strong access controls, continuous monitoring and clearly defined incident response responsibilities remain essential for protecting these interconnected systems.

NATO’s quantum roadmap: Preparing for operational adoption

Quantum technology is becoming an increasingly important consideration for long-term cybersecurity and defense planning.

Our latest analysis examines NATO’s quantum technology roadmap and the challenges of moving from research and experimentation toward operational readiness.

For organizations, the strategic relevance includes understanding future cryptographic requirements, technology dependencies and the need to plan for a gradual transition to quantum-resistant security.

From DIAMATIX: Progress on the D-NAVIO maritime project

This week, DIAMATIX published an update on the second D-NAVIO Project Meeting, held the previous week in Hamburg, Germany, and hosted by COLUMBIA blue – The Leisure Group.

Consortium partners reviewed technical progress and preparations for maritime pilot implementation and validation.

DIAMATIX’s contribution includes the ongoing development of a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solution for AI-supported decision-making, alongside its cybersecurity and risk assessment expertise.

DIAMATIX Weekly Signal

This week’s developments highlight three connected priorities: visibility into underlying technologies, control over trusted access and the ability to recover from disruption.

The PHP vulnerabilities show why security assessments must extend beyond the application interface to the software components beneath it. The ConnectWise incident demonstrates how third-party application permissions can become an attack path. Ransomware activity reinforces the need for reliable detection, containment and recovery.

Cyber resilience depends on understanding these dependencies and preparing to act when they are compromised.
