OpenAI Warns: Next-Generation AI Models May Pose “High” Cyber Risk

OpenAI has published a new security analysis outlining the growing risks associated with the next generation of large language models. For the first time, the organization describes a “high cyber risk potential,” emphasizing that as models become more powerful, the opportunities for misuse expand accordingly.

What OpenAI Highlights in Its Analysis

The report warns that future LLMs could substantially accelerate malicious activities — including malware generation, large-scale personalized phishing, and automated vulnerability discovery across cloud and public systems.

It also raises concerns about model-theft attacks, where adversaries attempt to extract model capabilities or sensitive training data through crafted prompts, stolen tokens, or compromised cloud environments.

OpenAI stresses that new guardrails will be necessary — not only at the model level, but also across infrastructure, authentication, and operational workflows.
