Cyber Threats Surround Bulgaria’s Euro Adoption – What Citizens and Businesses Should Know

As Bulgaria prepares to adopt the euro, cybersecurity experts are warning of a rise in phishing scams, fake websites, and social engineering campaigns exploiting the transition. Fraudsters are impersonating banks, government institutions, and currency exchange services to steal citizens’ personal and financial data.

Facts

  • Attackers are launching phishing emails and SMS messages pretending to be from state portals or commercial banks, prompting users to “update” their bank accounts for the euro.

  • Fake websites closely mimic government domains, often using misspelled URLs such as gov-bg[.]com or euro-bulgaria[.]info.

  • Phone scams are also increasing, with callers posing as bank employees requesting OTP codes or card details.

  • CERT-BG and the Ministry of Interior have issued alerts urging citizens to verify URLs, avoid unsolicited links, and contact their bank directly in case of doubt.

  • The campaigns increasingly target elderly users and small businesses with limited cybersecurity awareness.

Why It Matters for Businesses

The euro transition provides fertile ground for financial fraud and credential theft. Phishing attacks can compromise corporate email accounts (BEC), manipulate payments, or leak sensitive data.
Companies should strengthen internal validation workflows, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA), and adopt Zero Trust policies to minimize exposure.
